Why wind is so hard to fix by hand
Wind is not a steady sound. It comes in gusts, it changes pitch, and it often overloads the microphone with low rumble. Classic noise reduction tools learn a noise profile from a quiet moment and subtract it everywhere, which fails when the noise keeps changing. A speech model works differently: it recognises the voice in every moment and keeps only that.
Steps
- Open Noise Reducer and pick the windy video from Photos.
- Play the cleaned version. Switch to the original to hear the difference.
- If the voice sounds thin, try Strong or Balanced instead of Max.
- Save to Photos. Only the sound changes.
Prevent wind noise next time
- Turn your body so it blocks the wind from the phone's microphones.
- Use a small foam or furry windscreen on an external mic.
- Keep the phone closer to the person talking, so the voice is louder than the wind.
- Avoid covering the microphones with your fingers when you hold the phone.
What to expect
Moderate wind with a clear voice comes out very well. In a storm, when the wind fully covers the voice, no tool can bring back words that were never captured, but the result is usually much easier to listen to. You can hear the full result before paying anything.
Questions and answers
Can you remove wind noise from an iPhone video?
Yes. Open it in Noise Reducer, which removes wind and keeps the voice. On iPhone 16 and later, Audio Mix in Photos can also help for videos recorded with Spatial Audio.
Is there a free way?
Listening to the cleaned result in Noise Reducer is free. Saving needs Pro. Audio Mix in Photos is free but only works on Spatial Audio videos from recent iPhones.
Does it work offline, for example while travelling?
Yes. The model runs on the iPhone, so it works in airplane mode.
