The sound is measured in your browser only. It is never recorded or uploaded.
How accurate is it?
Phone and laptop microphones are not calibrated, and browsers adjust input levels differently, so treat the number as an estimate, often several decibels off. It is accurate enough to compare two spots in the same room, which is what matters before a recording.
Typical sound levels
| Level | Example |
|---|---|
| 30 dB | Quiet bedroom at night |
| 40 dB | Quiet office, library |
| 50 dB | Fridge hum, quiet street |
| 60 dB | Normal conversation, busy cafe |
| 70 dB | Vacuum cleaner, busy traffic |
| 85 dB | Heavy traffic, loud restaurant |
Already recorded in a noisy place?
If your recording or video picked up the room, Noise Reducer can remove background noise on your iPhone and keep the voice.
Questions and answers
How many decibels is a quiet room?
Around 30 to 40 dB. A room under 45 dB is usually fine for voice recording.
Is my microphone audio saved?
No. The meter reads the level in your browser and keeps nothing.
Does it work on iPhone?
Yes, in Safari and other modern browsers. Allow microphone access when asked.
